¡Se vienen cositas… y suenan en 8 bits!

El próximo 11 de septiembre, el documental Europe in 8 Bits cumple 10 años y vamos a celebrarlo por todo lo alto en una tarde-noche de cine, chiptune y diversión. ¡No os lo perdáis! ¡Es en Valencia!

Comenzaremos en los Cines Babel 19.00 con la proyección de Europe in 8 bits. Dirigido por Javier Polo, el documental se adentra en la subcultura europea del chiptune o música de 8bits. De la mano de algunos de sus protagonistas, muestra cómo la reutilización creativa de Game Boys y consolas obsoletas transforma tecnología antigua en una vanguardia musical llena de energía. Moraleja: la limitación técnica da pie a la innovación sonora con un mensaje punk, esta cita en Cines Babel estará llena de sorpresas. Después del cine, nos encontraremos en la Sala Matisse a partir de las 23.00 Nuestra misión: disfrutar de los sonidos más originales y divertidos de la escena 8bits. Para la ocasión, contaremos con cuatro de los artistas más relevantes que aparecen en el documental. 

Para empezar, dos viejos conocidos y compañeros de la escena nacional, Ralp y Culomono; junto a ellos, el que no podía faltar, Meneo, embajador casi mundial del 8-bit latino sabrosón; y, finalmente, desde Italia, Kenobit, sin duda uno de los grandes referentes de la escena a nivel global.

Ralp
En sus directos a los mandos de la Game Boy, el estilo de Ralp es un techno oscuro e IDM incisivo de alta precisión rítmica. Ralp se aleja de melodías retro del tecno y exprime el chip de la consola para generar graves descomunales, secuencias punzantes de regusto ácido y percusiones abrasivas extraídas del canal de ruido. Su propuesta es puramente de club: una rave maquinal marcada por estructuras matemáticas en evolución, arpegios vertiginosos y un pulso denso e hipnótico. Con una destreza técnica implacable, demuestra que el hardware de 8 bits puede sonar tan agresivo y complejo como el mejor sistema analógico.

Culomono
Culomono actúa armado con dos Game Boys con las que lleva el estilo DJing hacia una explosiva mezcla de hardcore gabber caótico, chiptune noventero y techno desenfadado. Su propuesta convierte el chip de la consola en una ametralladora de bombos distorsionados y melodías rápidas e hiperactivas. Aprovechando la síntesis de 8 bits al límite, fusiona arpegios frenéticos, ritmos acelerados sobre los 166 BPM y una actitud punk cargada de humor. El resultado es un directo rave rabioso, nostálgico y extremadamente bailable que transforma la Game Boy en un auténtico mazo de sonido 90s ideado para el pogo.

Meneo
Con Meneo, el estilo estalla en un electrotropikal salvaje, cumbia de 8 bits y reguetón mutante impulsado por una energía escénica arrolladora. Para Meneo no hay solemnidad electrónica, él transforma el chip de sonido en una máquina de ritmos sabrosos, melodías adhesivas y líneas de bajo gruesas diseñadas para el perreo. Su propuesta fusiona la cultura del chipmusic con el desenfreno del pop y la cultura de club iberoamericana. Nos lanzará de lleno en un espectáculo performativo, siempre irreverente, donde la Game Boy se convertirá en el motor absoluto de la fiesta que deseamos: una fiesta física, sudorosa y sin prejuicios.

Kenobit
Nuestro último artista invitado es Kenobit, a quien le conocen por su tecno visceral, electro afilado y chiptune de alto octanaje, centrado en la pura energía de la pista de baile. El artista italiano exprime la consola para tejer tramas rítmicas complejas con bajos profundos y el desarrollo de secuencias hipnóticas. En su propuesta destaca la tensión melódica constante, los covers frenéticos y un pulso bailable de gran dinamismo que huye del cliché retro. Con él nos sumergiremos en un directo orgánico, crudo y sumamente técnico que transformará el hardware clásico en un sintetizador de club moderno. ¡No dejará indiferente a nadie!

Big things are coming… and they sound like 8-bit!

On 11 September, we’re celebrating the 10th anniversary of Europe in 8 Bits with an evening and night of film, chiptune and fun. Don’t miss it! We’re in Valencia!

We’ll kick things off at Cines Babel at 7 p.m. with a screening of Europe in 8 Bits. Directed by Javier Polo, the documentary explores the European chiptune (or 8-bit music) subculture. Through some of its leading figures, it shows how the creative recycling of Game Boys and obsolete consoles transforms old technology into an energetic musical avant-garde. The lesson? Technical limitations can spark sonic innovation while sending a punk message with it. And expect a few surprises at Cines Babel!. After the film, we’ll meet again at Sala Matisse from 11 p.m. onwards. Our mission: to enjoy some of the most original and entertaining sounds on the 8-bit scene. For the occasion, we’ll be joined by four of the most prominent artists featured in the documentary.

First up, two old friends and fellow travellers from the Spanish scene, Ralp and Culomono. Alongside them, the one artist who simply couldn’t be missing: Meneo, an almost-global ambassador for deliciously Latin-flavoured 8-bit sounds. And finally, coming all the way from Italy, Kenobit, undoubtedly one of the major names on the international scene.

Here are a few notes on each of them ;-)

Ralp
Live and at the controls of his Game Boy, Ralp delivers dark techno and incisive IDM with razor-sharp rhythmic precision. Steering clear of retro techno melodies, he pushes the console’s chip to its limits, generating colossal bass, piercing acid-tinged sequences and abrasive percussion drawn straight from the noise channel. His sound is made for the club: a machine-driven rave shaped by evolving mathematical structures, breakneck arpeggios and a dense, hypnotic pulse. With formidable technical skill, Ralp proves that 8-bit hardware can sound every bit as aggressive and complex as the finest analogue system.

Culomono
The stage will be armed with two Game Boys, pushing DJing into an explosive mix of chaotic hardcore gabber, 90s chiptune and playful techno. He turns the console’s chip into a machine gun of distorted kicks and fast, hyperactive melodies. Pushing 8-bit synthesis to the limit, he blends frantic arpeggios, accelerated beats at around 166 BPM, and a punk attitude charged with humour. The result is a furious, nostalgic and irresistibly danceable live rave that turns the Game Boy into a full-blown 90s sonic sledgehammer built for the mosh pit.

Meneo
With Meneo, things explode into wild electrotropikal, 8-bit cumbia and mutant reggaeton, all driven by an unstoppable stage presence. There’s no room for electronic solemnity here: Meneo turns the sound chip into a machine for infectious rhythms, sticky melodies and thick basslines made for perreo. His sound fuses chipmusic culture with the exuberance of pop and the wild energy of the Ibero-American club scene. He’ll throw us headfirst into an irreverent, performative spectacle in which the Game Boy becomes the engine of exactly the kind of party we want: physical, sweaty and gloriously uninhibited.

Kenobit
Our final guest artist is Kenobit, known for his visceral techno, razor-edged electro and high-octane chiptune, all geared towards the raw energy of the dance floor. The Italian artist squeezes every last drop out of the console, weaving complex rhythmic textures from deep bass and hypnotic, evolving sequences. His sound is driven by constant melodic tension, frantic covers and a highly dynamic dance-floor pulse that steers well clear of retro clichés. With Kenobit, we’ll plunge into an organic, raw and highly technical live set that transforms classic hardware into a modern club synthesiser. One thing is certain: he’ll leave no one indifferent!
